PTM #97 on March 20th 2026!
Founded in 1978, City Farmer Society established the Strathcona Community Garden and the Lord Roberts School Garden to demonstrate urban agriculture across diverse Vancouver environments. In 1981, City Farmer boldly transformed a former parking lot at 2150 Maple Street into an organic food garden and in 1990 this site became the City of Vancouver’s Compost Demonstration Garden.
City Farmer now receives thousands of visitors from around the world eager to see how urban land can be managed in a productive and environmentally sustainable manner. As a living classroom, it features a variety of compost systems, a cob shed with a green roof, and cultivated beds of vegetables, herbs, fruit, and pollinator-friendly perennials. In warmer months, visitors may observe local wildlife, feed mulberry leaves to silkworms, and harvest hops used in beer making.
Do you have a story to tell about City Farmer’s 48 year history?
We will continue to share stories, quotes, photos and historic context to the area and site that is now City Farmer, in Kitsilano.
