Plaque

Established in 1935, the Australia New Zealand Association (ANZA) Club was
created to provide a social hub and cultural link for Antipodean immigrants in
Vancouver. The association eventually raised enough funds by April 1969 to
purchase the property at 3 West 8th Avenue, which was originally built in 1914
as the Mount Pleasant Gospel Hall. The venue has since become a fixture in the
neighbourhood, with the upstairs hall hosting public and private events, from live
music and fundraisers to punk shows and weddings. The downstairs members’
lounge offers a welcoming and inclusive environment with a pool table, games,
and dartboards, making it a cozy spot to catch a game or unwind with friends by
the fireplace.

Vancouver Heritage Foundation presented plaque #95 to the Australia New Zealand Association (ANZA Club) on Thursday, February 20th 2025.  It was a night of live music performances, beer tastings, history…and hot dogs! The society started in 1935 for the purpose of connecting visitors from down under, became an independent venue, a community driven members club, and a hidden but not so secret fixture of the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood.

Watch a February 18th 2025 video interview with Rowan Jang, ANZA Club Board Director and John Ackermann, CityNews.
